At first glance, the virality of this shop seems to be at least partly because of its sleek, sensible design, playful name, and branding aimed directly at a younger, chronically online audience. Still, their millions of fans in Japan and worldwide have to be on to something, right? As with any other, I had to ask…is it really worth all this hype? Is the security guard at the front just for show, or are folks really beating down the door to get in? I tried eight flavors during my visit to the Times Square location to find out.

This flavor is the best example of the soft, pillowy nama dough: brioche-like, melt-in-your-mouth, and just sweet enough. I'm Donut?'s signature flavor doesn’t have the traditional hole in the middle, but it is dusted with a layer of powdered sugar to remind you that it is, in fact, a donut.I’m a vocal Krispy Kreme loyalist, but these are better than that chain’s classic glazed donut—and that is very high praise coming from me. This one was my third favorite flavor, only knocked out of the top two because of its simplicity.I was hoping for a little bit more strawberry flavor, but I was very into the kind of glaze they used for this donut. Instead of the sticky, easy-to-smear glaze I find on most donuts, the glaze was set enough so it didn't smudge everywhere, but soft enough to bite through without coming off in an entire sheet.

This is my second favorite flavor. The pistachio flavor is subtle but present, with some extra crunch from chopped pistachios. This had the same style of glaze as the strawberry donut, meaning I could eat it in peace without the glaze going up my nose.My favorite bite of the day, no contest. Rich, slightly bitter chocolate dough with a caramel espresso cream center that tasted like sipping a macchiato.

Stuffed with a combination of sake jelly and chantilly cream, this flavor was the most eyebrow-raising. Not my favorite, but sake lovers will be obsessed.

Matcha lovers will not be disappointed with this one. Tons of matcha flavor.It's possible the iconic carb basket only

smaller because we just can't get enough of that warm, slightly sweet brown bread. The bright side is that you can make some of our Cheesecake Factoryand have seconds (and thirds) right at home.
